PER IL RISPETTO DEI DIRITTI DELl’UOMO IN GUATEMALA

CMI: In Guatemala si stanno avvicinando le elezioni e nelle ultime settimane si è testimoni di una escalation di violenza nella quale hanno perso la vita personaggi di spicco impegnati nella lotta per i diritti umani. Ultimo di questi casi, Jose Mèndez, strenuo paladino e difensore dei diritti civili, figlio di quell’Amilcar Mèndez, che ricevette il premio RFK Human Rights Award nel 1990.
Josè era stato minacciato di morte ripetutamente negli ultimi tempi ma nonostante la protezione garantita dalla Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, è stato ucciso a colpi di pistola il 17 agosto 2007 da un gruppo di sconosciuti. Il Governo guatemalteco sembra non voler fare niente, e gli attivisti si stanno muovendo per far sì che venga almeno istituito uno Special Prosecutor per indagare sulla sua morte e quella degli attivisti occorsa nelle ultime settimane.

Dunque a tal scopo, a nome del Coordinamento Monarchico Italiano, Lorenzo Gabanizza ha scritto una lettera al Presidente del Consiglio e al Ministro degli Esteri italiani, all’Onu, all’Unric, al Presidente e al Vicepresidente del Guatemala.

Eminent Mr. President, Eminent Mr. Deputy President:

I respectfully presume to write regarding my worries about recent happenings in your country. I write, too, convinced that you will listen to my concerns and respond favorably to my request, which is also the request of all honest Guatemalan citizens, as well as foreign people who follow with interest the news and happenings in your country.

I am convinced of it, because today, the borders divide humanity only as regards traditions, but the world has become a single country where Man is tied to Man thanks to Democracy. What happens then to one Guatemalan fellow, cannot but be seen as something involving your own brother.

Therefore, Mr. President and Mr. Deputy President, I write to you with the hope to receive from you, or by someone so given the charge by your government, a prompt reply, since you, Mr. President, have committed your service in government to building a better country. This will be and can only be possible by justice. And it is directly to this supreme and inviolable justice I make my appeal.

Jose Emanuel Pepe Mendez, son of Amilcar Mendez, was murdered on August 17, 2007, by assailants with high caliber weapons in Guatemala City, even though the Commission on Human Rights had granted to him special measures of protection. The death of this exemplary citizen that gave so much to the Guatemalan indigenous communities has shocked all human rights advocates.

In the light of this terrible fact, and in the light of the numerous murders of public figures and activists, I appeal to your sense of justice in hopes that the Guatemalan government names as soon as possible a Special Prosecutor to investigate the death of Pepe Mendez and other [murdered?] activists. Guatemala, Alma de la tierra, has in front of her, thanks as well to the efforts of your Government, a brilliant future. This future, however, cannot and must not rise up on the blood of the innocents and the impunity of their killers.

I look forward to hearing from you on this vital matter.

Egregi Signori,

vi scrivo in merito alla situazione preoccupante del Guatemala. Nelle ultime settimane si è testimoni di una escalation di violenza: personaggi pubblici di spicco e seriamente impegnati nella lotta per i diritti civili dei guatemaltechi sono stati assassinati e sembra che nulla o nulla di serio il Governo abbia intenzione di fare per assicurare alla giustizia i colpevoli. l’ultima vittima è-¨ Josè Mendez, assassinato a colpi d'arma da fuoco a Guatemala city il 17 agosto da un gruppo di sconosciuti; e questo, nonostante gli fosse garantita protezione speciale dalla Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

Chiedo a voi, affinchè, attraverso i canali che riterrete più opportuni, venga istituito uno "Special Prosecutor" per indagare sulle morti occorse nelle ultime settimane e che sembrano legate proprio all’impegno di queste persone nel campo dei diritti umani.
